Societies and countries are striving to achieve better life for everyone around them. They are doing whatever is possible in terms of macro and micro economic parameters. This is a constant race. And guess who is going to win or retain its lead . Those who understand that “Innovation” is the keyword. You can never replace scientific and original thinking by anything else. You have to be original. You have to be genuine. And you have to think outside the box. That is the only way to win this race. For innovation and creativity there is no age limit. And there are no geographic barriers. One can be original and creative at any age and anywhere. Thats one reason we need to tap creativity at an early age. In school itself. We just need to reorient the young minds to realize their true potential. Afterall they are the future. So THINK INNOVATION and you will touch the finish line ahead of others.

Today a new search engine named “Cuil” (pronounced “Cool”) was launched by some ex-employees of Google. Cuil management claims that they have indexed 12 billion pages compared to about 4 billion pages indexed by Google. The other great feature is privacy. Unlike Google, Cuil does not store any private information about the user like IP address or cookies. On its first day of launch the performance of the search engine is not up to the mark. People are reporting that Cuil returned no results for many keywords. Yeah, it is early days and these may be teething problems. Anywayz the moral of the story : Retain your good employees if you dont want to add some more competition.

Hey, did you hear about the new kid on Search Engine Block ? Its name is Poweset and it is claiming to change the internet search scene entirely. It is a semantic based search engine which tries to use natural language to fetch search results. When you type different words, Powerset tries to get the meaning of what you are trying to locate and returns the results. As of now you can search Wikipedia and Freebase using Powerset. I tried a few phrases myself and it did return good results. I recommend you guyz to try it out yourself. The URL for Powerset is www.powerset.com
And yes there are rumours that Powerset is being bought by Microsoft for almost $ 100 M. Not bad for a search engine so new and not yet tested fully.
No doubt, Powerset is innovative and revolutionary in its approach. If implemented correctly this can prove to be a real challenge for Google. Keep your eyes and ears open for this new kid on the block.

The other day while attending a networking meeting I met a gentleman who asked me a question which triggered this post. He asked me, “How do you optimize the “Search Engines” like Google” ? For a moment I was taken aback. Then I realised that to the uninitiated the term “Search Engine Optimization” may mean optimizing the search engines like Google, Yahoo , MSN etc. The fact is it is not so. No body can touch the search engines. Google is Google’s property. Google can manipulate Google. If anybody else could manipulate search engines, search engines would be finished by now. To that extent the term “Search Engine Optimization” is flawed. The right word to describe the process should be something like “Web Site Optimization (WSO)”. This is what a SEO consultant does. He optimizes the web site so that it can be ranked higher by search engines. The consultant achieves this using two things. The “on-site optimization” and “off-site optimization”. Whatever the changes consultant does on the web site portion is broadly classified under “on-site optimization”. The “off-site optization” covers basically all other ativities by which site is made popular. Because a popular site ranks higher.
Coming back to our discussion. Whether you call it “Search Engine Optimization” or “Web Site optimization”,what is important is you get it done for your web site. So that you start leveraging internet to generate some business. Remember what Shakespeare said, “What is in a name ?”.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was important yesterday. It is important today. And it will be important tomorrow. But its so important today than ever before. The biggest reason is the economic scene all around us. In the context of tightening economic scenario and booming gas prices, SEO is something a business owner just can’t ignore. If tight economic situation means less customers, we need SEO to find the customers wherever they are. And what better way to target them and find them, than SEO.
Now coming to ever increasing gas prices. If you employ a sales force to bring in customers, gas prices are effecting you more than ever before. Add the sales cycle and scenario is not very sunny. SEO helps in two ways. First you reduce the sales cycle by bringing in targeted customers, the ones who are looking for what you are selling. Secondly you eliminate a part of sales force by making your website the “sales force”. The beauty is the new sales force, your website, works even on weekends. Takes no holidays. Never reports sick. And never asks for a raise.
